Chötrul Düchen Tashi Delek!

I'd just like to take a moment to remind all of you that today, February 28th, 2010, is Chötrul Düchen. This is the butterlamp festival, and one of the most important festivals in Tibet.
All actions, both positive and negative, are multiplied 10,000,000 times. So today is a VERY good day to practice and perform good deeds...it's also a VERY bad day to perform negative deeds.

Chötrul Düchen is commemorated because of it's significance in the life of Shakyamuni Buddha. Shakyamuni, in order to increase the faith of his disciples, performed a different miracle every day for 15 days. The 15th day was Chötrul Düchen. Hence it's extreme auspiciousness.

So, I wish you all sooo much happiness, health, wealth (of all kinds), and general auspiciousness in this year of the Iron Tiger!

Dharma Behind Bars

So, I ran across the following article on CNN today:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/02/25/colorado.supermax.silverstein.solitary/index.html?hpt=C2

It tells the story of Tommy Silverstein ("Terrible Tommy") who is currently in solitary confinement in a Colorado prison. For 27 years, he has been cut off from any form of human contact, longer than any other prisoner in the federal prison system. He initially went to jail for armed robbery, for which he received a sentence of 15 years in 1975. Since he entered the prison system, he was charged with 4 murders, one of which was overturned. All of these took place in prison. The most recent was in 1983, when he killed a prison guard who was supposedly harassing him. Ever since, he has had zero human contact, except for a random glimpse of a guard's hand through the food slot.
Now, ordinarily I would just write a story like this off as a sad account of somebody who couldn't handle the poisons of Samsara. While I'd never condone the actions of these inmates, I feel great compassion for them, because their suffering is greater than most of us will ever experience...and for those with a life sentence or a death sentence, the negative karma that led them to a prison cell will follow them into their next life, which will probably be in one of the lower realms. They have very little chance of generating merit in this lifetime, and will continue in the seemingly endless cycle of death and rebirth.
But I noticed something intriguing about Silverstein. The CNN article mentioned that he spends his time doing yoga and meditating. He also does a great deal of art and poetry, as do a lot of prisoners. I decided to look a little further into the life of Tommy Silverstein. I ran a google search and found a blog that included a collection of his drawings and paintings. I was amazed to find that, along with some very sad expressions of his loneliness, some of the most beautiful drawings of many Enlightened Tibetan Buddhist masters. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Jamang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro, Dudjom Rinpoche, etc. I was shocked and rather inspired. A man who has generated enough terrible karma to spend lifetimes in the hell realms finding the Dharma and using decades in prison to meditate. That's truly extraordinary.
I know many of you may be thinking that he is absolutely beyond hope. This man obviously has a LOT of terrible karma following him. He's a murderer and a thief. He brutally murdered 4 people, used heroin for years, and committed plenty of other crimes. But think about it for a moment...Jetsun Milarepa murdered 35 people. He learned and practiced black magic to harm other people for his own benefit and vengeance. But he found the Dharma, and through deep, devoted practice, attained Enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings. Who are we to deny the inherent Buddha nature of "Terrible Tommy?" If he is given the Dharma, and if he practices it as diligently as he possibly can during his time left in prison (his theoretical date of release is in 2095), he DOES have the ability to end the cycle of death and rebirth and liberate himself.
His living situation is indeed unfair. He shows extreme remorse for his actions, undoubtedly softened through the Dharma, and has spent almost 3 decades without any human contact. Should he not be allowed to re-enter the general prison community? Nobody is arguing that he should be set free. Law is law and karma is karma. But he should be able to join the general prison community.
But regardless of where he serves the rest of his sentence...and life...the Dharma is truly the only hope that he has. So here is my recommendation:
If you have any spare Dharma books, or if you would be able to write a letter or offer words of wisdom, SEND THEM! Use this as an opportunity to offer compassion to somebody who can truly use it. This is a man who had the good fortune of being exposed to the teachings. Unfortunately, he neglected the blessing of being born into a precious human life. But it's never too late to practice, which is all he can do now.

You can contact Tommy directly at:

Also, an organization that focuses on fair treatment of prisoners says, "If you do decide to write Tommy, feel free to use our PO Box for your address. Just be sure you give us your real address so we can forward his letters to you...PO Box 285;Blue River, Wi 53518" (from the blog that I mention below) So, if you don't want him to have your address, you can contact the organization and they will forward anything he sends in response.

For some reason, I feel like this is a very important thing to do. This is all coming up on a very interesting day for me. It's nothing huge, but about a week ago, I was at Blockbuster, and really wanted to watch a Dharma-based film. I couldn't find anything, and remembered the film that was made about Milarepa a few years ago. I went up to the counter and asked about it, knowing very well they would probably never have it. Turns out they could send it to me. So I decided to go ahead and do it. I got it and watched it last night. The film itself was alright. But I was frustrated by the fact that it ended too soon. Before he even met Marpa. But regardless, Milarepa has been on my mind all day. Then this article popped up on CNN, and I happened to see the part about meditating, and decided to look this guy up online. I ALSO just found out today that Milarepa's anniversary is on Saturday.

More info on Tommy Silverstein, as well as some of his art, can be seen at the following blogs:

An interesting angle on the Tibetan situation

So...I was thinking about the Tibetan situation from a spiritual perspective, and I remembered something that I had heard about a while ago, but never really thought too deeply about. Something that could actually have a potentially serious ramifications for the future of Tibet. So I did a little extra research and decided that it may actually be of great enough importance right now that I should share it with everybody on Dulzhug.
I don't know if you know anything about the New Kadampa Tradition, but it's a hoax of a lineage of Tibetan Buddhism that is very popular in the west. It's a form of Gelug (or Kadampa) Buddhism that broke away from the main lineage in 1991 to continue the worship a specific being named Dolgyal. Dolgyal goes by many names. His followers refer to him as "Dorje" Shugden, but the word "Dorje" should NEVER be used to describe him. For the purpose of this blog entry I'll refer to him as The Gyalpo (A gyalpo is a kind of malicious spirit that has received the Vajrayana and developed powers, then breaks Samaya and decides to use these powers in a bad way. They are simply powerful, bad spirits). The Gyalpo was held as a protector of the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism (the tradition that H.H. The Dalai Lama is the head of), hence holding great power over Tibet's government as well as Tibetan Buddhism as a whole.
His Holiness practiced the Puja of The Gyalpo for a few years as a kid, because one of his teachers taught it to him early on. In the late 40s, when he was in his early teens, he read in H.H. The Fifth Dalai Lama's works that The Gyalpo was an extremely malevolent spirit that would greatly harm Tibet and the Dharma unless he was eliminated completely. Some other Lamas of antiquity spoke about him as a very powerful and evil spirit as well. H.H. also learned that The Gyalpo was responsible for a break in the Tibetan Government that occurred around the time of the 5th Dalai Lama. So through learning this, His Holiness stopped practicing The Gyalpo, and told his followers to do the same. It was right around this time that the Chinese invaded.
Chogyal Namkhai Norbu spoke about The Gyalpo, saying that his uncle, along with 4 other Lamas, went insane (literally) at a Sakya monastery because of the Gyalpo practice.
In the west, there is a huge movement of western Gyalpo followers. People who denounce His Holiness and follow this spirit, claiming that he is a legitimate deity to be worshipped. If you ever attend a talk by H.H. and see a large amount of caucasian people in robes protesting, that's the NKT people. A lot of temples devoted to The Gyalpo have also been established in Tibet and China, especially since the invasion. Actually, after His Holiness left Tibet and the Chinese took complete control, they forced monasteries to re-establish or continue the practice of the Gyalpo even if they attempted to stop. There were some murders a few years ago in Lhasa that were committed by followers of the Gyalpo, and there are constant crimes committed against legitimate lineages by NKT members.
It's said that The Gyalpo has a very strong intention of destroying His Holiness and The Dharma. He is a very strong spirit who's practice provides benefit for the practitioner for a short time, but eventually causes one to go insane or worse, especially if they go against him.
I, personally, never really thought about it and just knew to stay away from NKT. But after thinking about it and doing a little more research, I honestly think this spirit has a lot to do with the invasion and the degeneration of Tibet's culture and of Tibetan Buddhism. I think it's something that ALL practitioners should be warned about. With any Dharma event, make sure it is in NO WAY associated with the NKT or The Gyalpo. This is an extremely dangerous cult that is extremely harmful to The Dharma.
There have been numerous Pujas performed to try and eliminate The Gyalpo, but he is still around. A gyalpo spirit can live for 5,000-6,000 years, so unless something is done, it seems like this could remain a problem for a long time. It may even lead to the complete degeneration of the Dharma. Who knows?

Bhod Gyalo!
Jampa

P.S. There are a lot of books out by "Geshe" Kelsang Gyatso, the leader of NKT. Don't buy them, and I'd say if you own any, burn them.

Ki Dug Lam Khyer- Taking Happiness and Sorrow onto the Path

If I am happy, I am happy because I dedicate the merit.
May it fill space with immediate benefit and ultimate bliss.
If I'm in sorrow, I am happy because I take the sorrow of all upon me.
May samsara's ocean of suffering be emptied.
If I'm sick I am happy, because I am releasing the bad karma of many lifetimes.
May this suffice for the sickness of all beings.
If I did, I am happy because I will die in the state of Dharmata.
May the root of birth and death in samsara be severed.
If I live long, I am happy because through the two accumulations,
May the two-fold benefit of myself and others be spontaneously accomplished.
